Fair Events Information

Bags Tournament
Maeystown Fire Department is hosting a Bags Tournament Sunday July 28, 2019, Pre Sign up at Beer stand at 12:00 p.m. start at 12:30 $30.00 per team. Call john Valentine 618-410-0349 or Brandon Kruse 618-972-7508 maximum 48 teams.


Balloon Artists
Once again this year,Premeire Sandy Hermann will be sponsoring a Balloon artists on Sunday, July 21nd, and Thursday, July 25th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Hey kids, visit them under the Grand Stand across from the Fine Arts Building and receive, free of charge, balloon sculptures of animals and other unbelievable shapes.


Barnyard Animal exhibit
The Waterloo FFA Alumni will again sponsor a Barn Yard Animal Exhibit at the 2019 Monroe County Fair. This exhibit will be displayed in the Red Barn near the Commercial Exhibit Building. Young and old alike are encouraged to visit this exhibit and pet all the ag- related and farm animals.

Thunder and Lightning Cloggers
On Sunday, July 28, 2019, from 4:00-5:00 p.m., the Thunder and Lightning Cloggers will be performing at the Monroe County Fair. They were formed several years ago with a core group of seven cloggers. Through lessons and the addition of some experienced cloggers, the club has now grown to more than 20 people. They not only dance to the traditional bluegrass and Cajun type music, but also to Irish, Latin rock and other types of music. They were the host club of a clogging extravaganza at the 1904 World's Fair Celebration at Forest Park in April. Several times a year they dance at bluegrass festivals to the live music of George Portz and his Friends of Bluegrass. They have also performed at many festivals throughout Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri, including Old Time Music Fete, Cahokia, IL; Schlambach Fest, St. Libory, IL; Hillsboro, MO; Strawberry Festival, Kimmswick, MO; Heritage Days and the Fair & Wheat Festival, Okawville, IL; Fall Festival, Nashville, IL; Saline County Bluegrass & Bar-B-Que Festival, Harrisburg, IL; and many others.


Demolition Derby
The Demolition Derby will be held Friday, July 26, 2019, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Semi Stock Class is sponsored by Valentine Auto Body & Shelby's Auto Repair Inc.
The entry fee is $50.00 per driver and for passenger $30.00 only the driver and pit man will be allowed in the pit area.
The promoter of the event is Grandstand Attractions Inc.

Family Trophy
Once again, the Family Trophy will be awarded to the Monroe County family who earns the largest number of points on entries and placings at the Fair. Any interested family must make an application at the office on Monday, July 22, 2019. There will be no charge for the application. All members of the winning family must reside in the same household and must have made at least one entry in some department at the Fair. If you win the Family Trophy you cannot apply again for 3 years. A trophy, donated by Chip Bieber, will be awarded to the winning family on Sunday evening, July 28, 2019.


Behind the Scenes Tour of the Fair
Ever wonder how tall a sunflower grows, where wool, cashmere, and ice cream come from, or how many stomachs are in a cow? These and many more questions about agriculture are answered in the behind the scenes tour of the Fair hosted by the Monroe County Farm Bureau County Young Leader's Committee. The exciting and educational guided tour visits each exhibitor barn for an up close and personal experience with animals, farm equipment, and crop exhibits. The tours are free and open to all ages. The tour day is Wednesday, July 24. Tours can be arranged by contacting the Monroe County Farm Bureau at 939-6197. The office hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-Noon; 1:00-5:00 p.m.


FFA Sweepstakes Trophy
Every year Kelton Davis, Regional Superintendent of Schools, sponsors a trophy for the FFA Sweepstakes Award. This award is given annually to the FFA chapter that has the most student exhibit winnings. Points are given 1st through 6th place winnings which the students compete in, agriculture-related projects. Local agriculture teachers then tally up each chapter's points, and a winner is announced. The trophy will be presented on Sunday evening, July 28, 2019.


FFA Fun Night at the Fair
The FFA Fun Night will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday July 28, 2019 in the arena. The local FFA Chapters of Red Bud, Valmeyer, Columbia, Gibault, and Waterloo schools will compete in exciting events ranging from straw stacking to water wheelbarrow races. This event is sponsored by the Waterloo FFA Alumni Chapter. Corporate Sponsor, Scott Credit Union. The trophy for this event is sponsored by Wm. Nobbe & Co. Inc.


Kloepper Tournament
This tournament is sponsored by Waterloo Republic Times and Monroe County Independent. It will be held on Sunday, July 21th from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Under the beer pavilion, rules will be announced at starting time.

Pedal Tractor Pull
The Monroe County Farm Bureau Young Leader's Committee will sponsor a Pedal Tractor Pull for youth over age 4. The Pedal Pull will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. in the Poultry Barn. Registration for the pull will begin at 10:30 a.m. Weight requirements of participants range from 35 pounds to 120 pounds.
Participants weighing less than 35 pounds or more than 120 pounds the day of the pull will not be eligible to participate.
The six classes include:

  1. 35-45 pounds
  2. 46-56 pounds
  3. 57-70 pounds
  4. 71-85 pounds
  5. 86-100 pounds
  6. 101-120 pounds
Prizes will be awarded to the top two individuals in each class. All participants will receive a ribbon. For further information contact the Monroe County Farm Bureau at 939-6197.


Sand Sculpture Contest

The Sandcastle and Animal Sculpture Contest will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2019, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at poultry barn.
Classes:

  • Tots Sandcastle or Sculptures Aged 1-3
  • Kiddo Sandcastles or Sculptures Ages 4-7
  • Big Kids Sandcastles or Sculptures Ages 8-12
  • Teen or Adult Sandcastles or Sculptures 13 & Over
Sandcastles or sculptures can be made by individuals or groups. Contestants should bring pales, shovels, and props.


Tractor Driving Contest
A tractor driving contest will be continued this year for those great tractor drivers.
The contest will be held near the main arena on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 beginning at 11:00 a.m. Participants must be residents of Monroe County or be a student at Columbia, Valmeyer, Red Bud, Gibault or Waterloo schools. The contest will be divided into two age divisions as follows:
A-2017 high school graduates and younger
B-2015 high school graduates and older
Division A participants may compete in one or both of the below categories:

  1. 2-wheeled driving event, written test practical exam
  2. 4-wheeled driving event, written test practical exam
Division B will consist of:
  1. 2-wheeled driving event
  2. 4-wheeled driving event

Explanation of events:
  1. TWO-WHEELED EVENT: Participants will be driving a tractor with a two wheeled implement through a course. Penalties will be assessed for knocking balls from posts, knocking over posts, going beyond the boundaries, and operating equipment without safety precautions. A six minute time limit will be allowed for this event.
  2. FOUR-WHEELED EVENT: Participants will be driving a tractor with a four-wheeled implement forward and backward into a specified space. Penalties will be assessed for knocking balls from posts, knocking over posts, going beyond the boundaries, and operating equipment without safety precautions. A four minute time limit will be allowed for this event.
  3. WRITTEN TEST: The written test will consist of 25 multiple choice questions concerning the safe operation of tractors.
  4. PRACTICAL EXAM: The practical exam will consist of a "rigged" tractor with unsafe features. Participants will be required to identify unsafe features or maintenance items that should be corrected before the tractor is used. A time limit will be used to identify these unsafe features.
  5. All participants will be instructed on what to do before the driving events begin.
  6. The contest will begin at 11:00 a.m. SHARP. Participants should congregate in the main arena by 10:30 a.m.

  8. Those interested should sign a registration sheet in the main office of the fair during fair week. A $1.00 entry fee will be assessed per person.
  9. A trophy will be awarded to the 1st place individual in each category with ribbons being awarded for 2nd through 6th places in each category.
Prize money in each category will be awarded as follows:
1st $25.00 - 2nd $20.00 - 3rd $15.00
